What is BOTOX®?
America’s most popular cosmetic treatment, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. During treatment, very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months.
How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?
Moderate to severe facial lines form over time as the result of muscle activity. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscles in targeted areas of the upper face. It works by temporarily blocking the transmission of nerve impulses of a chemical called acetylcholine, to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles and smoothes overlying skin.
How does BOTOX work for excessive perspiration?
This also works by blocking the chemical acetylcholine, in the sweat glands, reducing and sometimes eliminating sweating in the affected area. For the palms, 3 injections at the wrist (’wrist block’) eliminate sensation temporarily in the hand providing more comfort during the procedure. A series of tiny injections into the skin of the affected area complete the procedure. BOTOX for hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration) usually lasts between 8-12 months, after which time treatment can be repeated.
Is treatment with BOTOX® painful?
Little to no discomfort is experience in this brief procedure. Prior to injecting, your physician at Acqua Skin Clinic will numb the area. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Most people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment.
Who is a good candidate for BOTOX treatment?
If you are healthy and have no serious medical conditions, you may be a candidate for muscle-relaxing injections. If you are pregnant or breast feeding or take certain antibiotics (eg. Gentamicin), you are not a suitable candidate for treatment and alternatives will be discussed. BOTOX should not be used in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neurological disorders such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.
How long do Hyaluronic Acid fillers last?
Depending on the type of HA filler used, results can last from 6 months up to a 18 months plus. This is discussed prior to treatment.
Will my face look ‘frozen’ or expressionless?
In expert hands, BOTOX relaxes muscles sufficiently to smooth wrinkles providing a younger, fresher complexion without changing your appearance too much or rendering you expressionless. The muscle activity that causes lines is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases forming. You will have the opportunity to discuss your exact wishes with your doctor before treatment.
What will happen to the lines on my face if I choose not to continue treatments?
If you decide to discontinue treatment, your skin will still look smoother than before you started, since the facial muscles are not contracting as much during the period of treatment. However, once full activity of the muscles returns, the normal aging process will continue and lines are likely to slowly return. If left untreated, moderate to severe lines may become permanent.
Are there any risks?
BOTOX is safe and is now one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world. It is used in certain medical conditions such as blepharospasm, strabismus, cervical dystonias, perspiration, and in cosmetic use for lines and creases. Side effects include a red bump or tiny bruise at the site of injection. Other potential side effects include brow droop, ptosis (eyelid droop), and rarely double vision, lasting a couple of weeks. In experienced hands, these side effects are extremely uncommon.
Will I see results straight away?
No. The effects of BOTOX begin about 2-3 days after treatment, with the full effect evident at 2 weeks.
How long does BOTOX® last?
If you are receiving BOTOX for the first time, results last approximately 3 months. If you maintain treatments, the results last a little longer each time, up to 6 months in some individuals. Excellent correction from unwanted perspiration may last 8 to 12 months in the affected area.
Without future injections, how will my skin look?
Your skin will still look smoother than before you started, since collagen has been stimulated to grow and the lines and folds have been supported with the filler during the period of treatment. However, correction will reduce gradually, the normal aging process will continue, and creases are likely to slowly return.
My lines are not that bad yet. Do I need muscle-relaxing injections?
Decisions to undergo treatment should be based on your wishes and desires, following education and information from your doctor. More people are deciding to go for treatment at a younger age before obvious lines develop. As well as smoothing existing wrinkles and lines, BOTOX is very effective in preventing aging lines from developing.
